Reader’s Question:

Do I need to have a CA driver’s license to be insured in the state of California? I will be a student but I do not want to give up my driver’s license in Hawaii.

Andrea

Central Coast, CA

No, you do not need a CA driver’s license to be insured in Central Coast, California with CA insurance on a car. You should be able to register and insure a car in the state of CA with your Hawaii driver’s license since you are a student and therefore would not normally fall into the resident category the state of California has in place.

If after you finished school you decided to live in California then you would need to change over your Hawaii license for a California driver’s license.

The CA Department of Motor Vehicles states that if you take a job in CA or become a resident in California, you must obtain a CA driver license within ten days.

You may contact the CA DMV directly if you have any questions with regards to how to register a car.

Do I Have To Pay For Teen Driver Auto Insurance in Massachusetts?

Reader’s Question:

My auto insurance carrier is insisting that I list my newly licensed daughter as a primary driver on one of the car on our insurance policy. Can they do this? Is this mandatory in Massachusetts? I was under the impression that my daughter just needed to be added on the insurance policy as a driver and could drive any of the cars listed on our insurance policy. We live in Lynn, Massachusetts.

Charles

Lynn, MA

It can differ but many insurance carriers like to list the driver as the primary on the car that he or she drives the most, though they are covered to drive the other household cars also (as long as no exclusions are on the car insurance policy). It appears that your insurance carrier is such a company that requires your daughter to be listed as the primary driver on the vehicle that he primarily drives and that is not unusual.

While this is up to the insurance carrier to decide typically if they match up the different drivers with the different cars that they drive the most, to find out if this is mandatory in Lynn, Massachusetts you can contact the state’s insurance regulatory body. In Massachusetts this is the Division of Insurance and can be contacted by calling their consumer hotline at (617) 521-7794 or you may contact them online

I’m Only 14 Years Old – Can I Legally Drive Now?

Reader’s Question:

I am only 14 years old and I would like to know if I can have a relative teach me how to drive in Canton, Ohio?

Ethan

Canton, OH

No, you cannot begin driving at the age of 14 in Canton Ohio. According to the Ohio law that the minimum age to begin driving legally is when you are fifteen years and six months year of age. In Ohio you can get a temporary permit if you are at least 15 years and 6 months of age so at the age of 14 you would be too young to get your temporary permit and be able to operate a car legally with a supervising adult driver.

So while you may want to begin to learn to operate a vehicle at the early age of fourteen doing so could get yourself and the owner of the vehicle you are driving cited by law enforcement officer and severe penalties. When you are old enough to operate a vehicle and have your permit or license then your parents will need to notify their insurance provider to be certain that you are properly covered by their car insurance policy

Reader’s Question:

I have a teenager driver and I am just wondering how I can find out if my teenager has ever received any ticket for any kind for any reason, here in Georgia? We live in West Dougherty, will this affect my insurance rate?

Jane

West Dougherty, GA

There are a few ways in which to obtain a copy of your own MVR or driving history in Georgia. To get your teenage child’s driving record in West Dougherty GA it appears that you will need their authorization. If your teen will permit you to check their record you should be able to see at their driving record online, via mail or in person.

A Georgia Driving History Report (MVR) can be bought in person at any Georgia DDS customer service center location. You will need proper identification and the cost is $5.00 for a three year record and $7.00 for a seven year record.

If your teenager child does not allow you authorization to look at their driving record so you can check if they have any traffic violations or tickets on their Motor Vehicle Record, you may want to verify with the GA DDS to check if there is any way to see the MVR without the child’s consent.

What average grade point does a seventeen year old boy in Madisonville, Kentucky have to have for car insurance discounts?

JImmy

Madisonville, KY

I am not aware of certain grade point average that a person must carry in order to be able to have car insurance in Madisonville Kentucky. The state of Kentucky does have a form of the No Pass, No Drive law though that authorizes the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to have administration regulations with regards to a minor driver licensing applicant.

This administration regulation, KRS 186.400, requires participating schools to inform the Transportation Cabinet if a teenager withdraws from school or is academically deficient. Therefore as 17 year old and are deemed to be academically deficient and you drop out of a participating public school or you will lose your driver’s license.

Young Driver Car Insurance Rates in Georgia

Reader’s Question:

I am just wondering why my teenagers auto insurance rates are so high in Georgia?

Samuel

Albany, GA

Auto insurance rates in Georgia are based on statistics. According to statistics show that teens have more incident of crashes. Young drivers have very high rates of both nonfatal and fatal crashes compared with drivers of other ages.

There are newer approaches now such as Canada’s graduated driver licensing that are being enacted to try to reduce teenage crashes and the injuries and deaths they cause.

Teens have more crashes in vehicles whether the rates are based on the total number of teenagers, on miles driven or on the number with licenses. Both miles driven per license holder and license rates are lower among 16-19 year-olds than among drivers age twenty and older (as a group), so when crash involvement is based on the number of licensed motorists instead of total population, the fatality rate of young drivers is even more extreme compared with mature drivers.

Reader’s Question:

My daughter is so excited about getting her license as she can get behind the wheel of her own car that we will buy for her. I know that the best thing that I can do is to look into the cost of car insurance that covers a teen driver here in Florida. Will I ever get affordable teen auto insurance?  Seems the insurance rates are as much as the car payments each month!

Anne

Miami, FL

There’s no question that teen drivers are known as “high risk drivers” by any insurance company, especially in Florida. Not much to your surprise, that means more money to fork out. Also not to keep your hopes up but, you could still be able to get the cost down of your daughter’s car insurance and even give you some extra freedom.

There are simple ways to help you keep your daughter’s car insurance as low as possible. You can add her to your insurance plan. This may seem strange but when she is signed on your insurance plan, it lowers the cost for her even if you are paying for it. If you live a hundred miles away from your daughter’s school, you can ask her to leave her car at home and also allow your insurance company to know about this. It could also reduce the cost of her policy if you can get her ride with you on occasion to reduce the number of miles she goes.

Make sure also that you daughter has good grades as majority of insurance companies will offer “good grades” discount on teen car insurance. The idea behind this is that good students are also good drivers. Believe it or not, but getting a straight B or better is enough to get good grades discount. So I advise you to encourage your daughter to do well in school as she will benefit from it as well.

Maryland Teen Car Insurance – Can I Put My Teenager On My Policy?

Reader’s Question:

Can I insure my teen daughter on my car insurance policy if she does not live with me? She has her own house. We live in Maryland.

Calvin

Columbia, MD

The answer to that question depends on whether you want to insure your teen daughter to drive your vehicle or insure her vehicle on your insurance policy policy in Maryland. You can easily insure her as a driver on your car insurance policy by contacting your insurance carrier to find out their procedure and if there would be any additional premium due. If you want to insure her vehicle on your policy you will need to check with your insurance provider as some of them will not insure cars from more than one household on a single car insurance policy. This might not apply if she is a student and keeping her vehicle away at school.

Reader’s Question:

I have two teenage daughters that are going to be 16 in a few months. They will be obtaining their license shortly after that. Will they automatically be insured once they get their license on my insurance policy? They will only be driving with an adult. Do I have to add them on my insurance policy? As long as they drive one of my vehicles are they covered?

Howard

Bridgeport, CT

Insurance guidelines and state laws differ so you will need to inform your insurance company’s agent and discuss the licensing of your teenage daughters and when they will need to be added to the policy.

An insurance company is allowed to consider all resident operators of an insured car in rating of an auto insurance policy. This includes your teens, even if he or she has only a learner’s permit.

Some insurance providers will not require children to be added during the permit stage but will once they obtain their junior, provisional or full license. Other insurance companies have internal guidelines that require you to add your teens as soon as they start the licensing process. If you want to know the state laws regarding auto insurance for teens you can contact your state’s insurance regulator.

New Car For My Teen Son Costs As Much as The Auto Insurance Premiums!

Reader’s Question:

I bought my teenage son a new car. After getting quotes from auto insurance companies in South Dakota, I realized auto insurance for teenagers have higher premiums. Is there any way I can lessen charges for my son’s car insurance?

Jenny

Sioux Falls, SD

Most insurance companies charge higher premiums for auto insurance for teenagers because teenagers are assumed to be more accident-prone and reckless compared to adults. But still there are ways in which you can lessen the charges for your son’s insurance in South Dakota. To get a better deal, you need to put emphasis on the importance of a clean driving record for your son. Such can be done by observing traffic laws and avoiding speeding tickets and any other traffic violations at all costs.

Premium payments are usually less for auto insurance with a greater deductible. In your choice of car, choose one that has more advanced safety features to avoid having a hazard in the high ranking class which can increase premiums. By getting a stand-alone policy, you son will be responsible for his own insurance and he will only be allowed daylight driving, a certificate from a driving school, among others. It would also help if you make your son accountable for whatever happens to his car by working part-time so he can pay for half of his car’s premium. That way, you do not only reduce cost, you also inculcate in him the value of responsibility.
