Reader’s Question:

Hello! My dad recently bought me a used Honda Civic. I am still a freshman in college and was wondering how I can reduce the high cost of auto insurance since I’ll be the one paying for it. Are there discounts for cheap car insurance for college students?

Cheap car insurance for young drivers is still possible to find these days. The first step is to go to an online car insurance comparison website. Fill up the form with your personal and vehicle information and once you done that, submit it and a list of car insurance company will show you their on going rate. Just take note of the most inexpensive rate because it still doesn’t end there. The insurance quote you got is just an idea on how low your insurance rate can be. You can still lower that quote by doing the following:

  • Save money on a savings account so you can increase your deductible. A higher deductible means lower insurance premiums and you’ll be confident in an event of an accident because you know you can cover the high deductible amount that you choose.
  • If you learn how to drive from a relative or a friend, learn and get a defensive driving certificate to lower your premiums.
  • Cheap car insurance for young drivers means sticking to a low profile car. Don’t think you can have a fast and powerful car and at the same time asking for a cheap car insurance.
  • If you still live with your parents, register the vehicle under their name and get a discount for being in their insurance policy.

Cheap car insurance for college students is achievable but you need to allocate your time and you should be ready to work for it.

Reader’s Question:

Is it possible for me to get my own car insurance policy inĀ  Minnesota? I am a 18 year old beginner driver, and I finally got my own car…..yahoo!!

Richard

Minnetonka, MN

You should be able to get your own car insurance policy at age of 20 if you are a fully licensed driver. Your vehicle insurance rates will probably be expensive as a young driver. However you would be able to place auto insurance on your car if you are fully licensed.

If you do not have your own car, then you may obtain a non-owners vehicle insurance policy. Basically this is a liability coverages that could be used when renting a vehicle.

If you are still residing at home with your parents normally it will be cheaper to stay on their auto insurance coverage until you move out. Some parents though would want their children to have their own car insurance policy once the child has bought a vehicle which they do not want to place on their car insurance policy.

At the age 20, as an adult, you can have your own auto insurance policy. Normally you would have to have a parent or legal guardian sign on your insurance document if you are under eighteen years old since teens cannot enter into contracts.

Reader’s Question:

Do I need to have a CA driver’s license to be insured in the state of California? I will be a student but I do not want to give up my driver’s license in Hawaii.

Andrea

Central Coast, CA

No, you do not need a CA driver’s license to be insured in Central Coast, California with CA insurance on a car. You should be able to register and insure a car in the state of CA with your Hawaii driver’s license since you are a student and therefore would not normally fall into the resident category the state of California has in place.

If after you finished school you decided to live in California then you would need to change over your Hawaii license for a California driver’s license.

The CA Department of Motor Vehicles states that if you take a job in CA or become a resident in California, you must obtain a CA driver license within ten days.

You may contact the CA DMV directly if you have any questions with regards to how to register a car.
